Mencía · Alan de Val
Galicia in a glass — and proof that the Atlantic reaches even the inland valleys. This is Alan de Val's youngest red, but don't let "young" fool you: it's serious wine from a family that's been working these slopes since before phylloxera.
100% Mencía, hand-harvested from the family's own vineyards on the hillsides of A Rúa, in the Valdeorras valley carved by the river Sil. Medium-bodied, bright cherry-red with violet edges. The nose is all red and black fruit — ripe, almost jammy — with subtle spice, liquorice, dried flowers and a whisper of fine leather. Fresh and elegant at the same time.
Named best red in Galicia (Acio de Ouro) at the 2024 Galician wine competition — not bad for the "entry" wine.
Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C. Brilliant with grilled meat, stews, cured cheese, or a plate of Galician charcuterie.
