Bodegas Navajas: Classic Rioja from Navarrete

Fourth in our Meet Our Suppliers series: a Rioja winery that's been quietly setting the benchmark for quality-to-price in the region since the 1980s.

Classic Rioja.

Bodegas Navajas is based in Navarrete, in the heart of Rioja. The winery traces back to 1918 (originally Bodegas Arjona); the Navajas family joined in 1978 and took it over fully in 1983, holding to one simple principle ever since: make quality wine. They farm around 150 hectares across Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja, hand-harvesting low-yielding, old-vine fruit, and age their wines in a cellar of thousands of French, American and Romanian oak barrels.

The result is one of Rioja's great value stories  from bright, fruit-driven young reds, whites and rosés to properly aged Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. Their Crianza in particular is a benchmark for quality-to-price in the whole region.

If you want to understand what makes Rioja, this is a brilliant place to start.
